Immigration Seminar for Scholars and Graduate Students (UCLA 12/3)

Dear CSSA members,

Most of you know that many American companies and government research institutions would not hire people without a permanent residence status: basically, no green card equals no job offer. But don’t let your immigration status hinder your job hunting! Did you know that Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers can also apply for green card? And do you know when it is the best time to file a green card petition?

The SEQ CHAPTER Law Office of Sun Asso. Shaub &Williams will be hosting a seminar, sponsored by CSSA-UCLA, on immigration laws to help international students and scholars succeed in the current economy and job market. Join our seminar to find out the steps you should take for your H1B visa, green card applications! Admission is free!

Event:  Immigration Seminar Series by Alice Sun

Time:   Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 6:30-7:30 pm

Place: Math 6229, UCLA Campus

For interactive campus map go to  HYPERLINK "http://maps.ucla.edu/campus/" http://maps.ucla.edu/campus/ Driving instructions can be found at the end of the announcement

Speaker:    Alice Sun, Attorney at Law. Member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Licensed in California.

Linda Yoon, Junior Associate with Law Office of Sun Asso. Shaub &Williams

Language: English

Admission: Free.

Light Refreshments will be available.

Major Topics:

[This program does not represent the views of the CSSA-UCLA.]

I.  Immigration Issues to Help You Survive and Succeed in Economic Down-Turn and Bad Job Market

Self-Petition Green Card Application

The U.S. Job Market Has A Trend to Require Green Card to Job Applicants. Many companies and governmental research institutions make this question the first one in the job interview: Do you have green card?

More often than not, no green card equals no job offer.

In the current economic and job market, ask NOT if the employer can offer you a job and get you green card. Ask what you can contribute to the company without bothering your employer to apply for a green card for you.

How can you get your green card before you have a permanent job? We will tell you how.

Our seminar will address:  (1)  How you can get a green card while still in a postdoctoral position or a Ph.D. student; (2) Introduction of a self-petition green card application for EB2NIW and EB1A categories; (3) Qualified individuals for self-petition green card; (4) Documents needed to successfully apply for a green card; (5) The best time to file; (6) Where to find an experienced law firm to help; and (6) When you can expect to receive your green card.

II. Employment Visa without H1B Visa Number

If H1B visa numbers were used up in one day, how can you engage in employment in a private company without an H1B visa number?

In our seminar, we will let you know the process of Ph.D. graduates and postdoctoral researchers we helped to obtain O1 work visas in one (1) to five (5) business days.

III. Questions and Answers

You are encouraged to bring any particular questions to us so that we can address them at the seminar and help other people having same questions. Our email is cssa.ucla.question@gmail.com

Looking forward to your participation!

Seminar on Mutual Funds by Dr. Jerry Liu & Dr. Bill Chen at University of the West (12/6)

Saturday, December 6, 2:00-3:30 p.m., 2008

A mutual fund is a pool of money from many investors and invests it in the financial markets. It is a professionally managed fund. There are different types of mutual funds with investments in stocks, bonds, or short-term money market instruments. Some funds are open-end and the others are closed-end. Some are loaded (charge fees/commissions) and the others are un-loaded.

In this seminar, Dr. Jerry Liu and Dr. Bill Chen will share their experience with the audience. In particular, they will discuss different types of mutual funds—its features and advantages and disadvantages to the investors. In addition, they will explain how investors should choose the appropriate mutual funds based on their personal conditions.

Dr. Jerry Liu is an adjunct professor at UWest. He is a Partner at Triple Barrel LLC (an incubator which focuses on technology and multimedia companies) and he was a Partner/Member of Olsen Capital Management LLC (a hedge fund).  Dr. Bill Chen is the Chair and Professor of the Department of Business Administration at UWest.

The seminar is organized by the Center for the Study of Minority & Small Business and the Department of Business Administration at UWest.

The seminar is free of charge to the public. UWest is located in Rosemead, 1409 N. Walnut Grove Avenue (turn right off Fwy 60, exit at San Gabriel). Please call (626) 571-8811, ext. 125 to reserve seating.
